Fay.jpg (29635 bytes)I’ve always loved the feel of fabric. When I was four my grandmother taught me to sew buttons on washcloths to keep me out of her stitches. I loved hand sewing and creating texture with embroidery. I learned to sew garments from my mother and 4-H leaders. Other interests in my late teenage years distracted me from my needle time.

After a 15 year dry spell of no stitching, I was enlisted to help on a quilt to raise funds for battered women in Lincoln, Nebraska. I was hooked on quilting. I enrolled in a class and started collecting quilts. My first attempts were traditional. I was inspired by the bold colors and strong lines of quilts by Amish women.

Moving to western Colorado in 1988 changed my view of the world. The sandstone patterns, unending vistas and texture of sagebrush and cactus influenced my perceptions. The Petroglyphs and Pictographs created by the early Americans continue to inspire my work. I create instinctively and am often surprised and delighted with the finished piece.

I live in the incredible high desert of Glade Park, Colorado, where my photographer-husband, Steve Traudt, and I marvel at the solitude and abundant wildlife.
